The FIM Heritage
Certification

The 4 categories
of FIM Heritage
certification.

Eligibility of machines

This service is offered to all collectors/owners worldwide. All categories of speed motorcycles that have competed in national, international and world championships are eligible for certification, including: World Championship Grand Prix, Superbike and Supersport, Endurance, Road Races and all former championships.

“Classic” race machines, which were generally built long after the original period of the models concerned, are not eligible for certification as they create confusion over the historic machines covered by the protection programme.

The four FIM certification categories

HISTORIQUE

An original racing motorcycle whose history, origin and condition are known and attested to by written evidence dating from the period when the machine was in use, such as period testimonials, invoices from the original period and race records. For unique machines, the Technical Committee may also accept photo dossiers as evidence.

ORIGINALE

An original racing motorcycle in the condition it was in when it was ridden in competition but whose history is not known or cannot be confirmed in the absence of written evidence. Technical changes that may have occurred while the machine was being used for racing, for however long a period, are accepted as they were commonplace.

EVOCATION

An original racing motorcycle presented in a decoration with which it has no historical connection. The purpose of this category is to make it clear to the public that there is no connection between the machine’s decoration and its history.

REPLICA

A replica is a machine reproduced in its entirety (chassis – equipment – engine) exactly like the original. Substituting a road engine for an original competition engine in order to obtain Replica classification is not permitted.

Certification process

Dossier: all owners must provide very comprehensive information about their machine in a confidential dossier submitted through a web application.

This information relates to all technical and historical aspects – evidence relating to history must be provided as described in the rules.

Technical Certification Committee

A Technical Committee made up of international experts in makes, models and periods examines and assesses the documentation for each machine. This very comprehensive documentation and the attached information supplied by owners as proof of authenticity enable these specialists to assess the historic character and conformity of machines.

This is the only procedure that can clearly establish the history of these machines by reviewing their results and identifying the motorcyclists who rode them where proof of this history exists.

The certification

Certification generates a unique identification number which the machine will have throughout its lifetime – a FIM identification plate and a secure digital certificate are assigned and provided for every machine. Certified machines are automatically registered in the confidential FIM database. An owner can subsequently ask for changes to be made if there are any developments in relation to their machine. Certification follows the machine in the event of a change of ownership.

Certification fees

The fee for the certification is €500.

Payment is made when the documentation is submitted and includes:

  • Digital certificate
  • FIM identification plate
  • FIM historic metal badge
  • Inclusion in the FIM database
  • Permanent validity
  • Change of owner-contact included
  • Possibility of changing category

The fee for the certification for multiple machines is as follows:

  • 5 to 10 machines: €400
  • 11 or more machines: €300

Certificate of authenticity QR code

A QR code affixed to the machine’s identification plate will enable members of the public to access historical or technical information about the machine from their mobile phone, while keeping the owner’s identity confidential. The FIM certification service is charged for at the rates in force in the application.
